The Signal

Agentic AI is starting to look less like a better assistant and more like a new way work gets delegated.

That shift is no longer theoretical. OpenAI's recent Codex research found that active users grew more than fivefold in the first half of 2026. More than 10% of users managed three or more concurrent Codex agents in a week, and 26.6% used reusable skills for complex workflows.

This is what enterprise adoption starts to look like: longer-running work, parallel execution, reusable instructions, and agents operating closer to real systems.

The catch is simple: autonomy does not remove the hard work around the workflow. It exposes it.

The One Story That Matters

Codex is becoming a useful early signal for enterprise agents because it shows what happens when people stop asking AI for answers and start delegating work to it.

The important part is not only that usage is growing. It is how usage is changing. Users are running multiple agents at once, delegating longer tasks, and using skills to repeat workflows. That is closer to an operating model than a prompt-response tool.

This changes the enterprise problem.

When an agent works for a few minutes, the user can often supervise the result directly. When agents run concurrently, retry tasks, use skills, touch files, call tools, and operate in the background, the organization needs a different kind of visibility.

The unit of concern becomes the run.

What did the agent do? Which instructions did it follow? Which tools did it use? What did it change? What did it cost? Where did human judgment enter the process?

That is why the recent Codex usage-limit issue matters. OpenAI said the problem involved background activity such as auto-review, subagents, duplicate execution, retries, and confusing dashboard reporting. The issue was fixed, but the lesson travels well beyond one product.

Background work is valuable. It is also harder to govern.

The public story is autonomy. The enterprise story is operational readiness.

Why It Matters

The hard part of agent adoption is not proving that an agent can reason through a task once. Most serious teams can already produce impressive demos.

The harder question is whether the workflow is ready to be operated repeatedly.

That means the data is reliable enough to act on. The APIs are available. Permissions are clear. Cost is attributable. Edge cases have an owner. Human review appears before the risky step, not after the damage is done. The outcome is visible after the run is complete.

This is why agent infrastructure is becoming a board-level topic. Agents create leverage when they move across business systems, but that is also where risk, cost, and accountability concentrate.

Autonomy without an operating layer becomes a new form of shadow operations.

For CIOs: Agent adoption is becoming an integration and operating-model problem, not just an AI enablement program.

For CISOs: As agents gain access to more systems, policy enforcement and auditability need to move closer to the action itself.

For CFOs: Agentic workloads will not behave like seat-based software. Usage, retries, model choice, and background work need attribution.

For business leaders: The best agent deployments will not replace institutional knowledge. They will capture, route, and scale it.

For platform teams: The hard work is connecting tools, data, approvals, cost visibility, observability, and fallback paths into something teams can actually operate.

Market Moves

  • OpenAI Codex: Research showed rapid growth in agentic usage, including concurrent agents, longer tasks, and reusable skills.
  • Codex operations: Usage-limit issues tied to background work, retries, auto-review, and subagents showed how quickly agent activity can become hard to explain without run-level visibility.
  • Cannes and agentic commerce: Brands and adtech leaders are preparing for AI agents as a new customer and commerce interface. That pushes companies toward cleaner data, richer content structures, API access, and new controls around automated buying and engagement.
  • Anthropic: Lower-cost models for autonomous work suggest more background agent activity will become economically viable.

Field Notes

A pattern keeps showing up in enterprise conversations: the demo proves the agent can reason through the task; production exposes everything around the task.

Teams run into fragmented data, unclear ownership, missing APIs, approval gaps, cost uncertainty, and limited visibility into what the agent actually did. These are not signs that agents are failing. They are signs that agents are moving into workflows that were never designed for autonomous execution.

That is the real work now.

One thing we are watching: teams increasingly separate agent capability from workflow readiness.

The agent may be good enough to act, but the surrounding workflow often is not ready to be delegated. The questions that come up first are practical: which systems can the agent touch, whose identity does it carry, what needs review, what does it cost to repeat, and how do we reconstruct what happened later?

That is where agent work becomes operating work.
